A recent and swift 200% move in AIG has taken the stock to over $50. Premiums in options in highly inflated, making a protective put buying strategy even more pricey, but still worth it!

MBIA Inc Reinsuring $184B portfolio of investment-grade US public finance credits insured by Financial Guaranty Insurance Company, receiving unearned upfront premiums of about $741M

- The public finance portfolio consists exclusively of investment grade credits, primarily in the general obligation, water and sewer, tax-backed and transportation sectors, and does not contain any credit default swap contracts, below investment grade credits or other credits inconsistent with MBIA’s credit underwriting standards.
- The reinsurance will be provided on a “cut-through” basis, enabling FGIC’s policyholders to receive the benefit of MBIA’s reinsurance by allowing them to present claims directly to MBIA.

Notable movers today that are getting some attention are:

IT:NYSE – Gartner, Inc is have a spectacular day with a 16% gain to $17.13. The stock recently hit a 52wk low of $13.75 and is rebounding.

VLNC – Valence Technologies has made a strong move to the upside on news of a contract with The Tanfield Group to manufacture and supply safe, Lithium Phosphate energy storage systems to power zero emission, all-electric commercial delivery vehicles. Last at $2.30 +50%.

PLCE – Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc is up 20% to $21.14 on January sales report.

POWI – Power Intigrations has made a strong move out the gates to hit $27.73 +29% this morning. The stock is up on upgrades from several analysts rushing to defend the stock after falling to $21.40 yesterday.

Microsoft +Yahoo = Microhoo?

A whole googol of lawmakers (yes, googol = 10¹⁰⁰ , do you like that?) are lining up to poke and prod the Microhoo deal. There are some pretty charts at the end of this article, so keep reading!

The House Energy and Commerce subcommittee wants to hold a hearing about online advertising market and other issues related to Microsoft’s bid to buy Yahoo. So as it stands, there are Energy and Commerce, Judiciary antitrust and a whole lot of other boring committee meetings set up before anything can happen.

This potential merger makes sense if any of these companies hope to challange Google in search and advertising, their biggest concerns are that of privacy.

So how should investors react?

MSFT – Back around $28 is a sweet…sweet support level. I like.

YHOO – The stock will hover around $27-$30 depending on if the deal gets a yay or nay. Sideway trends are a good way to sell options on and collect on the time decay.

GOOG – To quote Borat “I like! Is good!”. Below $500 is a nice entry for long term holds.

After taking a severe hit from mortgage related issues, insiders at ETFC have loaded up in the $4 area. This is either a show of faith or just an attempt to let investors know they trust their company with their own money, either way, it looks tempting.
